Stitch Clubs are small groups of up to 8 children (from age 8-19) and young people. The group is usually mixed ability and ages to encourage individual achievement and to support each other to create their own ideas. 

We meet in our purpose-built Stitch Studio in Pinner, North-West London – a cosy making cave full of inspiration.

Starting with simple hand sewing and basic fabric manipulation and then introducing and developing sewing machine and design techniques, children and young people are soon designing and creating their own items. Individual creativity and flexibility are as important as technique ensuring that confidence and skills develop while making fun and beautiful things.

The emphasis is on encouraging children and young people to have the confidence and skills to make items that they want. Getting an idea from your head to reality requires planning and adaptability: practical and creative skills. Creating in small groups encourages collaboration and support and taps into an important part of being human.

We supply everything – fabrics, haberdashery (ribbons, buttons and other bits and bobs), patterns, skill instructions and tuition. The only time you may need to make an additional purchase is if you require a specific fabric or notion when creating a particular project.

The Stitch Studio

This is a workshop for parent/carers and a child aged 16 or under, booked as a pair.

It will be an introduction to the sewing machine – how it works, how to thread it, select stitches, sew a seam and basic trouble-shooting. We will talk about different fabrics and how to chose the right fabric for the tote bag and measure and cut it accurately.

By the end of the workshop you will be sufficiently confident to go home and get started on your own machine and/or join our dressmaking workshop – AND you will have a lovely tote bag to inspire you.

Use of our materials, haberdashery and machines is included. If you wish you can bring your own. It is fun to bring an old shirt or other garment and use that to make the bag.

You can work on your sewing machine or one of ours. If you want to bring your own sewing machine please bring your instruction book.

Learn a new technique or get some guidance with developing an idea or just needing a tailor made session or time slot for some time out.

We will explore a selection of stitches including: running stitch, stem stitch, French and bullion knots and seeding stitch. If there is a particular line or fill that you need we will look at the different stitches. 
You can use these to create an image which can then be left in a frame or made into a small lavender shape.

There will be an opportunity to look at different fabrics and fibres you can use, with an emphasis on re-using and adapting scraps and other bits and bobs. 

You can work on your own design, an idea you have been mulling over or you can work from one of our images. You will learn how to plan and transfer your design onto your base fabric.

This workshop is part of Sam’s Harrow Open Studio. Her artwork will be around for you to use as inspiration and ideas. It will take place in the Stitch Club Studio in Central Pinner. This Aladdin’s cave is full of inspirational textile bits and bobs. It has been adapted to our new way of being with a lovely outdoor working space where you can relax and forget about the world outside.

You will leave with new ideas and the confidence to create your next embroidery independently.

Hand Embroidery : A relaxing afternoon of making

Learn simple stitches and how to use them to make something unique to you. This relaxing session is for beginners or those who want to free up their technique

An introduction to using your machine to 'draw'. We will work with a 'normal' machine foot and a darning foot (free machining foot). This relaxing session is for beginners or those who want to free up their technique.
You will work with a mix of fabrics (including soluble) and textures to create a flower bowl using your machine to draw the elements together. 
Learn simple stitches and textile techniques to make something unique to you. We may also combine some hand stitches to enhance your design.
All materials and threads will be provided. There will be an opportunity to look at different fabrics and fibres you can use, with an emphasis on re-using and adapting scraps and other bits and bobs. 
Bring your machine (with manual and a darning foot if you have one) or use one of ours.
Kirstie Allsopp called machine embroidery “the crack-cocaine of crafts”. This workshop will give you a taste of what she means – you might get hooked too (I am!).
*You should already be able to thread and use a machine before the workshop. If you need a refresher we may be able to book in a 121 before hand. Let me know.

Free-Machine Embroidery : A relaxing afternoon of making

A fun introduction to using your ordinary sewing machine to ‘draw’ designed for beginners or those who want a refresher. Get to grips with using your sewing mac

We have several options available, starting with a  3 hour creative session which could be making a simple applique felt cushion or hooped embroidery or embroidery/applique. 

Each party is tailored to suit the interests and skill levels of each of the participants. It is our aim that everyone goes home with something which they are proud to have created.

All materials and equipment is included. Sometimes there is something special required, but we can discuss that prior to confirming.

Contact us to discuss your requirements and we can tailor your ideal party. 

The parties do not include food, but we have a lovely outdoor covered space (with heating) which you may use after the stitch session. Bring your own celebratory food and drink. If you would like to book the extra time and space add this to your booking.
